Yoga poses for better sex

Most of us have heard about the benefits of yoga for the body and mind. However, one of the most overlooked benefits of yoga is its power to enhance your sex life. Yes, the practice of yoga can revolutionise your sex life.

There are various studies that have also looked into the effect of yoga on sex and sexual dysfunction in men and women. Research in the Journal of Sexual Medicine showed that after examining 12 weeks of yoga on 40 women, there was significant improvement in desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, and satisfaction. A similar study found that yoga was an effective method for improving all domains of sexual functions in men.

Find out how this relaxing and stress-free practice can invigorate your sex life and tap into your sexual energy.

What is yoga and how to practice it

Yoga is regarded as a traditional mind, body and spiritual practice or discipline originating in ancient India.

The term ‘yoga’ derives from the Sanskrit root yuj, meaning to ‘yoke’, ‘combine’ or ‘connect’.

It is typically associated with meditation and Hatha yoga, a style of yoga that combines breathing, yoga poses (asanas), and meditation as a form of exercise.

It focuses on strength, flexibility and breathing to boost mental and physical wellbeing. The postures combined with breathing are powerful enough to strengthen and stretch the muscles, increase the body’s flexibility, improve balance, fight various pains, reduce fatigue, and even improve the functioning of different organs.

Here are some tips on how to prepare for yoga practice at home:

  • Establish a routine with time and place
  • Choose a quiet environment without noise or interruptions
  • Avoid eating food or drink before yoga (30 minutes minimum)
  • Choose a mat to perform the yoga positions
  • Choose to wear comfortable and elastic clothes
  • Always respect the limit of your body. If it hurts, stop

The link between yoga and sex

Because yoga is a practice that encourages you to balance and be fully acquainted with your body internally and externally, it is closely linked to sex. The energy channeled during breathing and exercising causes an inner connection that allows you to experience a relationship with yourself and with others in a more complete and pleasurable way. Yoga practitioners are able to receive and provide more pleasure – an essential element during sex.

One of the main bodily effects expected by yoga is the increase in the intensity of orgasms. When muscle control is greater (in contraction and relaxation), you have more power in the pelvic region and the muscles of sexual organs. Therefore, men have stronger erections and women more intense sensations of pleasure, with more robust vaginal muscles and “tightness” impression.

Strengthening the mind and body

Another benefit of yoga is that the practice helps you to have more knowledge about the strength and limitations of your entire body. By improving posture, increasing balance and creating more flexibility and physical strength, yoga will improve your performance in bed, greatly helping your movement during intercourse.

Similar to sex in some ways, yoga works with certain breathing techniques – which can be more complex than you might think – and knowledge of each part of your body, beyond its limits. As a technique that contributes to a rhythmic and detailed exploration of the body, yoga can help in foreplay, often neglected, but essential to increase the intensity of pleasure. Why not combine it with an erotic massage to make the experience even more sensational?

With the balance of body and mind, providing greater awareness and control of breathing and movements, yoga allows a better harmony with the partner as well. By synchronising the energy of the bodies you will contribute to better sexual interaction.

Yoga poses to improve your sex life

The benefits mentioned above are achieved by practicing yoga as a whole. But there are some positions that can potentiate its effects, in addition to specifically touching the pelvic region, increasing blood circulation in the genitals, which help to increase libido.

If you want to boost your sex life, try using some of these yoga poses:

Cow-cat pose (Chakravakasana)

For this position, you will form a kind of table-shape with your body, supported by your hands and knees on the ground. Wrists should be aligned with your shoulders and your knees at hip level. Make sure your knees and ankles are hip-width apart.

To get into the stance cow, as you inhale, contract the abdomen by bending the back downwards, dropping your belly towards the floor. Lift your chin and chest so you’re gazing up toward the ceiling. Then slowly move into the cat’s posture, contracting your belly away from the ground and rounding your spine towards the ceiling. Release the crown of your head toward the floor. Repeat the movement from one to the other 5 times (or as many as like).

The exercise will strengthen the pelvic muscles, which are activated during sexual intercourse and during orgasm.

Bridge Pose (Setu Bandha Sarvangasana)

Lay on your back with your knees bent and apart. Feet should be flat on the ground and hip-width apart with heels directly below your knees. Then, press your elbows and shoulder blades into the floor. Lift your chest and raise your hips as you press your feet into the floor, slowly sending your knees forward. Lift your buttocks away from the floor as high as you can contracting your muscles.

Your shoulders should be in line with the base of your neck as you gently press the back of your head into the floor. Broaden your collarbone and bring your breastbone towards your chin. Keep your gaze straight up. Hold in this position for 60 seconds or take 10 regular deep breaths.

Not only does this posture stretch out the spine, back of the neck, thighs and hip flexors, but it helps to tone the quadriceps and hip muscles, strengthening the region and generating more intense orgasms.

Wide-angle seated forward bend pose (Upavistha Konasana)

Sit on the ground with your legs together and extend them in front of your torso. Then spread your legs apart as far as you can, keeping your toes and knees pointed upwards. Make sure you’re in a comfortable stretch and can maintain a straight spine. Press your legs and sitting bones down into the ground. With the help of breathing, lengthen up through your spine as you inhale.

As you exhale, bend from the hips and tilt your torso downwards between your legs – without forcing or causing pain. Stretch your arms on the floor in front of you, and slowly exhale as you start to walk your hands forwards. If you can hold your toes to deepen the stretch, or as far as you can reach. Hold this position for 10 breaths or for 1 minute.

Every time you breathe, try to stretch your back a little more, and when you release, move your body further into the forward bend. If you’re back begins to arch, do not lower any further.

This position is good for increasing libido, as it improves blood flow to the pelvis.

Yoga sex poses – discovering new sex positions

The practice of yoga positions can help you learn and have fun with new sex positions. As you evolve in the practice of yoga you will become more coordinated and able to test new things. This is because you will develop greater strength and flexibility in your body, allowing more elasticity and vigour during sexual activity.

When you are more confident, why not try out elaborate yoga sex positions or poses from the Kama Sutra? Yoga sex involves having sexual intercourse in yoga positions itself, such as plow pose, downward dog, and even the bridge pose. Incorporating yoga poses into your sex life will boost your mobility while providing intense sexual pleasure.

Practice yoga for better sex

As you get used to and stay committed to yoga practice, you’ll find that your body will become more flexible and strong, which will considerably help to improve your sex life.

There are many great yoga poses that will work to increase circulation to your pelvic region, resulting in a fun and sexy time under the sheets with your partner.

When practicing yoga poses, never force your body into pain and always know your limits to avoid any injuries.
